PRAYER is the substance of eternal life. It gives back to man, in so far as he is willing to live to capacity—that is to say, to give love and suffer pain—the beatitude without which he is incomplete; for it sets going, deepens and at last perfects that mutual in dwelling of two orders which redeems us from un reality, and in which the creative process reaches its goal. There is, as Bremond has said, even in the poorest and crudest prayer “a touch of Pentecost.” It awaits and expects the action of the Spirit, acknowledges the most mysterious and yet the most certain reality of our experience; the intercourse of the Transcendent God with fugitive man, and of fugitive man with the Transcendent God. Yet all our attempts to describe this mysterious reality are like the scientists’ attempts to describe the universe; at worst diagrammatic, at best symbolic and allusive. It eludes definition, refuses to be caught in the meshes of the mind.

From 1400 through 1700, the number of reports of demonic possessions among European women was extraordinarily high. During the same period, a new type of mysticism—popular with women—emerged that greatly affected the risk of possession and, as a result, the practice of exorcism. Many feared that in moments of rapture, women, who had surrendered their souls to divine love, were not experiencing the work of angels, but rather the ravages of demons in disguise. So how then, asks Moshe Sluhovsky, were practitioners of exorcism to distinguish demonic from divine possessions? Drawing on unexplored accounts of mystical schools and spiritual techniques, testimonies of the possessed, and exorcism manuals, Believe Not Every Spirit examines how early modern Europeans dealt with this dilemma. The personal experiences of practitioners, Sluhovsky shows, trumped theological knowledge. Worried that this could lead to a rejection of Catholic rituals, the church reshaped the meaning and practices of exorcism, transforming this healing rite into a means of spiritual interrogation. In its efforts to distinguish between good and evil, the church developed important new explanatory frameworks for the relations between body and soul, interiority and exteriority, and the natural and supernatural.

This book is the sequel to Robert Forman's well-received collection, The Problem of Pure Consciousness (Oxford, 1990). The essays in the earlier volume argued that some mystical experiences do not seem to be formed or shaped by the language system--a thesis that stands in sharp contradistinction to deconstruction in general and to the |constructivist| school of mysticism in particular, which holds that all mysticism is the product of a cultural and linguistic process. In The Innate Capacity, Forman and his colleagues put forward a hypothesis about the formative causes of these |pure consciousness| experiences. All of the contributors agree that mysticism is the result of an innate human capacity, rather than a learned, socially conditioned and constructive process. The innate capacity is understood in several different ways. Many perceive it as an expression of human consciousness per se, awareness itself. Some hold that consciousness should be understood as a built-in link to some hidden, transcendent aspect of the world, and that a mystical experience is the experience of that inherent connectedness. Another thesis that appears frequently is that mystics realize this innate capacity through a process of releasing the hold of the ego and the conceptual system. The contributors here look at mystical experience as it is manifested in a variety of religious and cultural settings, including Hindu Yoga, Buddhism, Sufism, and medieval Christianity. Taken together, the essays constitute an important contribution to the ongoing debate about the nature of human consciousness and mystical experience and its relation to the social and cultural contexts in which it appears.

Using the 2002 clergy sexual-abuse scandal as a launching pad, the author exposes the cause and effect relationship between Catholicisms celibate-monastic mysticism and its long history of clerical sexual dysfunctions. The author documents how the Catholic Churchs occult Gnostic/Neoplatonic worldview regarding the antagonistic differences between the flesh and spirit became the motivating cause for its history of clerical sexual promiscuity and antifeminine mind-set as well as its rationale to deify Mary, the mother of Jesus, as an incarnation of the divine feminine. Martin Hudale spent 12 years in pre-Vatican II Catholic boarding schools and seminaries. During this time, he studied various Roman Catholic doctrines pertaining to dogmatic, moral, ecclesiastical, sacramental and patristic theology. He was required to study Aristotelian and Platonic philosophy along with logic, epistemology and the Latin and Greek classical literature. As a result, he has the background experience, knowledge and credibility to write this book. After being ordained a Catholic priest, he worked four years at an inner-city parish church in the United States where his awareness of the homosexual and immoral lifestyles among some of his fellow priests was an important factor causing him to leave the priesthood. After he became a born-again Christian at the age of 40, he spent approximately 25 years researching and writing this book while receiving an M.S.degree in Counseling Psychology. He is presently married to his wife of 35 yrs. and the father of three adult children.
